Acupuncture Meridians

Acupuncture Meridians

If you are new to Acupuncture, one of the first phrases you might come across is the word “meridians.” Meridians are invisible channels or pathways that run like map lines throughout the whole body. Hundreds of acupuncture points along the meridians interact and affect virtually every organ in the body. Your hands, your ears, your feet, your head, your spine all with invisible highways that can direct healing in our bodies.

Connecting Everything in Your Body

Picture a road map: a profusion of points woven into a web by lines of travel. Now imagine this system 3-D map as a vast network of invisible energy pathways connecting to every atom, bone, organ, cell, tendon, each centimeter of skin, everything in your body! They link the upper part with the lower and the surface with the interior so that nothing is truly independent.

Now add other layers to this 3-D interconnected “map” of your mind, emotions, and spirit—everything conscious and unconscious. These extraordinary pathways are the meridians, and they create in your body all the invisible aspects of your health and wellness into an intercommunicating highway.

14 Meridian Channels

In total, it is generally understood that there are fourteen main meridians throughout your body. There is a meridian that runs up the center of the body on the front and another that runs down along the spine. Twelve other meridians run from head to toe along the rest of the body. Six channels of yin and yang cross each one of your limbs. Each yin organ (lung, heart, kidney, liver, spleen) is paired with its corresponding yang organ (large intestine, stomach, small intestine, bladder, and gallbladder). In Chinese Medicine there must be a healthy balance between the yin and yang for our bodies to function correctly.

Energy & Blood Info

Energy and blood flow continuously through the meridians, yet they also transmit information to and among your organs. Like signals to raise or lower your body temperature, signs that your body needs to release water, signals to regulate emotion, among countless others. Are you aware that your body is constantly communicating with itself through in numerous messages streaming through your meridians? These life-giving energy pathways help coordinate the work of the organs and keep your body balanced by regulating its functions.

Free Flow of Qi

According to TCM, as long as Qi flows freely through your meridians and your organs work in harmony, your body can remain healthy, which means that when your body’s meridian system functions well, you are well. Yet, due to several causes—like excess stress—your body’s meridians can become clogged or even blocked. This can affect the function of the corresponding organ and ultimately the whole body-mind-spirit.

Healing Stimulation

Meridians are incredibly sensitive. They can carry the effects of stimulation in the form of healing energy throughout your entire body. This amazing quality is what allows the various Acupuncture treatment modalities we use to work. Also, using foods, herbs, acupressure, and nutritional supplements helps stimulate the flow of this energy force in your meridians, restoring balance and health. As an acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese Medicine, please don’t be afraid to ask us any questions if you don’t fully understand some of the terminologies. The more you know about this ancient form of Medicine, the better you’ll understand how it can really impact your health for the better.
